For bass sounds, there’s no doubt - Minitaur is king (clearly heard even from videos). There’s the middleground that says the Sub Phatty is a compromise, except I can’t really get over the fact that it doesn’t have the CV mapping of its lesser or greater siblings: it really is what you see is what you get (I am aware of the “under the hood” features). The 32 has high Being totally honest, sonically, I would always choose the Slim/Little. great sounds and can be very Minimoog on a lot of settings. Lots of low end, growl and warmth needed. answer: it's not minimoog or taurus, gents. Well, with Winter NAMM right around the corner, might want to wait and see what pops up. I am debating between the Minitaur, the Sub Phatty, and the Sub 37. It combines the classic, hands-on control of vintage Moog instruments with a dynamic and ultra-gritty new sound engine. I don’t own the Minitaur, but I’d like to and I’ll probably get one soon. A lot of lesser used functions remain as what Moog call 'hidden parameters', accessed via a Shift mode. Thats all I have to say about it really, cheers Glyn. I guess its the size and convenience of the knobs all in one place. As the Sub Phatty was released as a replacement for their Little Phatty synth it's no surprise that it retains a lot of design features while also mixing in some elements of the Moog Minitaur. And I agree with those who’ve mentioned it, pairing it with the Mother 32 somewhere down the line seems like a great pair (especially in conjunction with my MF-102–superb ring mod!). My own quick breakdown is: etc. One thing that you should be afraid is the current quality control for the Sub line - I see a lot of people with problems that didn’t exist before, mainly with erratic potentiometers. The Sub Phatty takes everything that is vintage Moog, and packs it into a sound design machine that is both fresh and aggressive. Moog make a big deal over the Sub Phatty's short warm-up period, and it's clearly superior to many other synths. The obvious differences are a shorter, 25-key keyboard and a dramatic reduction in physical controls to better match the Sub Phatty layout. As someone who loves to model things with Lego bricks I thought I'd make this miniature model since the Sub Phatty is such a beauty (and it sounds amazing). The Minitaur is a one trick monster, as said before, but it does its trick in the best way possible. Your other synths can cover the ground the Minitaur can’t (note range limit, pwm) and you already have a great keyboard with the AK. Please check a video from SYNTHWAY using the Sub Phatty for Minitaur-like sounds…, I never tried the Sub 37 but I saw a comparison of the triangle - waves on Youtube ( between the DOM 1 and the SUB 37 ) - and it claerly showed that the pure triangle of the SUB is softer ( rounded at the top ). Slim and Little Phatty. The Moog Sub Phatty is a very enjoyable synth. The only reason I did not own an original Mini is I opted for an Odyssey at the time. I think it has a modern character and it needs to be explored by more people without that freaking multidrive function cranked up all the time. I am mostly interested in a Moog for basses, but if I had the additional range of the Sub 37 or Sub Phatty, I’m sure I would use it to some extent. own or owned several moogs. I reckon minitaur and sub 37 would be knobby heaven together. The Sub Phatty combines an old-school aesthetic and sound with modern design. The envelopes on the Minitaur are also incredibly snappy and fast; I think the combination of all of that allows for a different sound than what I can achieve with the BSII. A lot of good responses and insight into this debate. Thanks for all of the input, everyone. Also, the Minitaur and Mother-32 look great side by side! From the screenshots Moog supplied, however, it's sure to resemble the one bundled with the Moog Minitaur in terms of design and integration. The Mono Lancet also has some magic, but as a live keyboard player all my modules tend to collect dust, might sell them (some MFB as well) and some more stuff, get Sub37 and Prophet 6 and be happy (at least until next Namm. The Sub37 commands your attention and time. Despite the much simpler front panel, more features have been retained than you might think. It has various features and capabilities that you would not otherwise get on another synthesizer, and that makes it special.Moog has always been known to pay attention to detail on the little things that matter, but especially the sound quality which in fact is no “little thing” at all. Hey guys I want to know your opinion on this. Launched in 1971, Moog Inc’s Minimoog kickstarted a revolution in music technology that saw the synthesizer shrunk down from a room-filling modular science project to an accessible, portable and, most importantly, playable instrument aimed at musicians rather than physicists. I have owned 2 Moogs, a Moog Source and a Voyager and I have used them both extensively for bass. Just try to forget a moment about the overall sound and focus on the interface. The patent has expired quite a while ago and there are manufacturers using the same ladder filter in their products. So I sent it back and kept my Minitaur. I went ahead and got a Minitaur from Perfect Circuit during their Black Friday sale. Price is a consideration for me. Keep in mind, my Minitaur just arrived the other day, so I may not have the fullest report here. But I’m not sure I need everything. The Sub Phatty® is a highly aggressive sound design and performance analog synthesizer. Moog Music’s engineers have crafted the Sub Phatty’s oscillators to perform with extreme accuracy and require almost no warm-up time. I think if you tried out the Sub Phatty, you would come back and say, "Glad I got ALL THREE!". The keys on that thing are amazing, especially for the price. While the Minitaur is great, I’d still get the Sub Phatty. If it is also leads you might be after the miniatur can just go up to c4. However, the Sub 25 may be better seen as a successor to the Sub Phatty. It’s the synth I would recommend to anyone as a starter synth, and I have no plans to get rid of mine. Another option would be the werkstatt with cv expension board, “the moog mother of the poor”. The Sub37 can be warm, smooth, classical, but also modern, aggressive, and crunchy. Being rational, if you find a good price for the Sub, go for it! Thanks for all the feedback so far! I still hope for a " Maxitauer " to come out some day ( = all controls external ) . I would have bougth a Minitaur alltready if all parameters had buttons or knobs, I still hope for a " Maxitauer " to come out some day ( = all controls external ) . I’m not sure, but it doesn’t sound as clean as the Minitaur to my ears. I’m also waiting to see if Moog comes out with a non-tribute Sub 37 for a little lower price somewhere down the line. The sound is warm, deep, punchy, very flexible. Pass filter also, which is something none of the Phattys have! Minitaur limitations might lead you into getting another Moog soon, but it really sounds lovely in the bass department. It’s great–and the filter sounds fantastic–but I’m not great with a soldering iron, and I wanted more control than it offered. The digital controls over several parameters makes it a more capable machine, with repeatable envelopes, LFO keytracking and a few other cool treats such as phase resetting for oscillators, just like you get from the Minitaur. I make hip-hop beats and ambient doodlings, primarily. The Minitaur on the other hand has zero keys, which is good or bad, depending if you want to use the combo standalone or not (A4 + Moog). You get along with some persons and with some you don´t, with some you even fall in love. Input appreciated: Moog--Minitaur, or Sub Phatty, or Sub 37. OVERVIEW AND FEATURES The Sub Phatty is a monophonic analog synthesizer, very much in the tradition of other classic Moog synthesizers. (It also sounds muddy to my ears, as though the oscillators are not as sharp as the Minitaur’s.). Sub Phatty–perhaps a middle ground that I’m underestimating? For relatively little money you get a real moog with a real moog sound. If you can live with the interfaces, which provide definitely not a one knob per function design, you will get almost the same sounds as with the Sub37. That said, with the classic multimode filter set to 24/db lowpass, I can achieve some admirably Minimoog-ish sounds with the BSII. (Just a quick note: The Analog Keys does have a very nice keyboard, but the keyboard I end up using the most often–with some quick left-hand transposing–is my Bass Station 2. The even more complex moogs like voya and modular make you lose focus altogether imo, with them I just dial in sounds all evening. The recent wave of Moog reissues bring classic analog sounds with modern ease of use. I checked out the Sub37 lately and was really impressed, the whole mix is really awesome, almost a piece of art. All the pieces in the model are 100% Lego, everything is connected, took me a good 20 hours for the whole thing. I would go for the Minitaur…all the bass you can eat, and with the Mother-32 you will have a lot of sonic possibilities. I’m going to look at this like a keyboardist. But for bass in my experience the more complex the waveform gets the more pressure it looses (not just on the moog). So... if you want the Moog sound, then you only get it in a Moog. The Moog Sub Phatty Analog Synthesizer is quite the unique instrument. Things start to change when you start thinking about your money. Moog Slim Phatty vs Minitaur. Both Minitaur and Sub Phatty are great choices… I’ve seen some Sub Phatty go for 695 a few days ago (Sweetwater), and I have to say that for that money, you simply can’t get anything better. The Moog Sub Phatty is a perfect example, calibrated for generated club and dance music, but versatile enough for any application. If you start focusing more on the sound, I have a divergent thinking… to me, the Sub sound (including Sub 37), isn’t as good as the older Phatty sound you’ll find on. Both oscillators have variable waveshapes for added character. I got the Moog Sub Phatty about a week ago (my first analog synthesizer!). Maybe it’s just people overdoing it with the drive/feedback? Slim/Little, have a great interface - the knobs available have a distinct led feedback and you always know where you are live. I find my self using it even more often than I thought to record a quick bassline or … Not that the Sub sounds bad, after all, I have one. It is housed in a sturdy case containing a 25-note, velocity-sensitive keyboard, with a front panel that delivers plenty of hands-on controls for designing, saving, and retrieving your own sounds. One thing I disliked on the design is that a couple of interesting functions/parameters can only be addressed via computer interface and software editor. etc… I get it; it’s the high end model that does everything. Maybe this explains the muddyer sound ?? It is in details, but there’s something magical about the oscillators and filter that has been lost in this new generation. When people talk a lot about Moog, they tend to talk about the “classic Moog ladder filter,” and, indeed, the filter does sound great and the resonance is perhaps the most predictable–wild when you want it to be wild, harmonic when you want it to be harmonic–of any synth I own. I’m just not that person. Here's my first go at trying to recreate patches with the Minitaur, just for kicks, and for that 80ies feeling. layering minitaur with the sub 37, getting the Sub all squelchy or coarse and the Mtr doing sub will get you the lead / bass solo sound of your dreams, setting the pitchbend amountof the Sub high and the Mtr to something less or off in the down direction gets … It’s easy enough to find sweet spots even if you don’t dig deep, but unless you plan to, it’s a waste of your time, money and most importantly mental space. I wouldn't simplify your opinion of what this thing is just yet. Moog Sub Phatty: Sound and Effects Moog Sub Phatty is anchored by two free-running VCOs that have pitch ranges of 2', 4', 8', and 16'. I have a BSII too, and some other stuff (Prophet 08, Korg Monopoly, Octave Cat, Mono Lancet …). is minitaur really up 2 the challenge? I am partial to simply saying: Ah, go for the Sub 37; look at all of those modulation sources/destinations, and the feedback, and the arp/sequencer, and the duophony, and aftertouch, and etc. In terms of features, there are only a few things that the Minitaur has that the BSII doesn’t (Note Sync being the most peculiar and useful), and in fact, the BSII is incredibly featured, much more so than the Minitaur, and sounds great. with most i agree but there is slight overlap.. we had a moog rep Amos confirm the oscillator core is in fact minitaur's. layering with a4 works perfect so in most cases you don’t hear that two sounds are playing, get a rich low end from the miniatur and an extremely wide range of sounds to layer above from the a4 (or the ak in your case). WHY YOU SHOULD BUY THE MOOG SUB PHATTY. On the other end of things, I think: oh, the Moog Minitaur; it’s all the Moog you need: it sounds great and the CV mapping make it a lot more versatile than it may initially appear. And the ladder filter is patented. I didn’t compare to the others but most things I read online said the bass is the strongest on the minitaur. When buying a Moog … I also got a Moog Sub25 (the successor to the Sub Phatty) and although I loved it, having it in my home studio was like owning a lifted F-350 in manhattan. Ever since seeing Ghostland Observatory I have had an awesome amount of respect for the Voyager (every hair on my body shook at one point). Who knows? A 37 key would be way better. (Then I saw a Sub Phatty for a ridiculous price, but oh well, I have no remorse; the Minitaur is what I was leaning toward anyhow.). Moog Slim Phatty vs Minitaur. Perhaps it sparks a Moog passion in me and in a couple of years (of buying Moog products), I can help someone else with a similar question. (Although, it seems fairly clear right now that the Werkstatt was a prototype for the Mother 32, at least to me.) The Minitaur is a true Moog. That said, I do think the Sub 37 and Prophet 6 are going to appeal for more than one season. He said that Moog listened to it’s Phatty users and the Sub37 would be the answer. Versatility-wise, I think that the Sub line is a step above the others. The drums are samples and the intro-rhodes are VST. It is capable of doing almost everything the Sub 37 does (besides extra LFO and duophony) and is way cheaper… it also sounds the same as a Sub 37. But Moog decided to limit the range of notes in the upper realm. I’ve had the Werkstatt; it made me want a proper Moog. ), is the Minitaur a big improvement over the BSII? Minitaur for £340, and Slim Phatty for £400. With marketing showing wizened synthesists getting excited about the new circuitry, there clearly is something going on here. Personally, I liked the smooth character of the LP more, but there might be some potential for a "Taurus like" bass there... Been thinking about this myself since my Voyager is on the Moog factory bench getting fixed, so I'm trying to use the Minitaur in its place for now. It sounds like Minitaur is likely the way to go for now. Do you really think you need it? This monophonic, dual oscillator synth includes a sub oscillator for a distinct bass boost. Minitaur is plenty Moog. All of this is subjective beyond the point that a spectral/oscilloscope analysis of Moog vs. Novation oscillators would likely show some differences; what we make of those differences is up to us. The basic architecture will be familiar to most, two VCO's plus a Square sub Osc, single LFO, two envelopes (ADSR with hold and delay) and the mixer … It is worth a mention that the VCOs can come up … I don’t know if you own another keyboard besides the Novation, which is a 25 key synthesizer. I am a fair keys player, so the idea of a keybed is appealing, but not absolutely necessary. Thanks again for the input. In the spirit of continuous improvement, we are transitioning production of the award-winning Sub Phatty analog synthesizer to make way for a new standard: the Subsequent 25.Implementing upgraded sonic modifications and functional improvements, the new Subsequent 25 becomes the standard production model moving forward. If you want the most Moog for the money go for the Sub37, because it comes close to the Voyager and has some nice aces up it’s sleeve, which the Voyager misses. Reviewing it in May of that year, I commented that “it seems obvious that the Minitaur would sing as a lead synth too”, and the chaps at Moog must have agreed, because the next stage was the Sub Phatty, which took the character of the Minitaur and transplanted it into a diminutive keyboard synth. I remember Amos from Moog to tell that the sound engine of the Sub-Phatty and the Sub37 is quite similar if not identical. It really was appreciated. Thanks for all responses and I understand the ridiculousness of trying to compare a synth that isn't even out yet. You need an account to post a reply. The only things holding it back so far are the lack of keys ( 25 keys seem to limit a possible melody sometimes) and the hidden functions, for instance LFO reset would have been great to have as a button as this one matters a lot. It's a beautiful instrument, as we've come to expect from Moog, and it will probably last most users a lifetime if treated right. This synth has two VCOs, one VCF, one VCA, and two envelope generators as well as one LFO. On a thread a while back I read that for some hardware related reasoning that the Minitaur actually has a deeper fatter bass than the voyager (if true, Wow). Now that the Sub Phatty has been leaked and it's very reasonably priced and on paper is a much better value than the Minitaur I'm all confused about what I should do. I agree, it´s always the combination of small things, sound, features, and for me especially the UI, that make an instrument good. Sounds great, has an amazing presence and looks great on the table too. Studio Electronics, Macbeth, etc. Sub 37–does everything, nearly infinite possibilities, it would seem, but I can’t help but think it just sounds muddy in all of the demos I’ve seen/heard. Both Minitaur and Sub Phatty … Archived. The Moog Sub Phatty was launched at NAMM 2013 and drew a lot of interest as any new Moog synth is likely to. Don’t go for the Sub37 unless you want to make it central and learn it proper. The Minitaur is a one trick monster, as said before, but it does its trick in the best way possible. Have minibrute and microbrute but use them for basic analog sounds. (I have to say that Elektronauts constantly impresses me with the goodwill and helpfulness of its forum members.). The Sub Phatty is good enough and the Sub 37 just adds a little bit more to it, while expanding the user interface. I can’t comment on the other moogs but I got a miniatur to have a proper bass in addition to my analog four. I put the synth into 'panel active' mode so that the sound reflected the positions of the knobs and switches, and started to experiment. The black panel, orange lights, and wood looks great to me, but I’ll take function (and cost) over form any day. Now it was time to create some sounds. Comparing three of Moog's most popular synths. AFAIK Moog has also optimized the filter for bass sounds, but I could be wrong. They all sound good to me, but there is some silky magic about the Slim/Little phatties that I have not found on the Sub or 37. The filter behaves differently with the overload, oscillator wave shaping works a thousand times better and tonality is little bit more pleasant for me. … I think the Minitaur and the Mother is a pretty sweet combo. Sub 37 Tribute Edition. ( I have no expériences with MOOG ) . Again, any input from users of these synths would be helpful and appreciated. When you buy products through links across our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. the psychoacoustics-approach is interesting. It has 25 keys, 31 knobs and 13 switches that connect you directly to the analog heart of this powerful instrument. Of note I have owned a SP and wasn't overly impressed with SubBass and have a SE-1X which covers similar territory to the Voyager on paper. Is the bass that much stronger? I think there is nothing after midi-note 73. same with gear. The Slim and Little are discontinued, but you might get a good price for them - remember that the Little also has 37 keys. The minitaur has a very solid low end. Compared to these 2 the others seemed like boxes, toys, computers. I used to teach writing, so in case this is too long (or poorly the edited) the TL:DR of it is: perhaps not much; “psychoacoustics”; rich oscillators, snappy all day envelopes. The ultimate moog bass is the MiniMoog. 11. If it had four octaves, I would never look at another keyboard again. The Sub line is the more versatile and would grant you a lot of crazy sonic capabilities - I wouldn’t even consider paying more for the extras in the Sub 37 though. I never found a clip that compares waves of the different Moogs . and the filter is of course the same old transistor ladder circuit, tho those dont all sound the same either (esp the new generation) - sub phattys filter when in 4pole position sounds pretty much like minitaur's to my ears.
